Overland AI, a developer of autonomous ground systems for defense, has raised $100 million in funding to meet growing military demand for its ULTRA vehicle technology. The Seattle-based company, founded in 2022, is focused on integrating ground autonomy directly into operational military units.
Key Developments and Achievements
The company has successfully completed the DARPA RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) platform after three years of testing. This accomplishment has positioned Overland AI to expand its operations across various military missions including counter-UAS, intelligence gathering, contested logistics, and breaching operations.
Stephanie Bonk, co-founder and president, emphasized that demand for ground autonomy has shifted from experimental to operational integration. The new funding will enable the company to scale alongside military units adopting their technology while incorporating continuous user feedback.
Military Partnerships
Overland AI has established working relationships with multiple branches of the U.S. military, including:
- U.S. Army units (82nd Airborne Division, 1st Cavalry Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 36th Engineer Brigade)
- Marine Corps (2nd Marine Logistics Group)
- Special Operations Command (SOCOM)
Additionally, the company has partnered with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to support wildfire mitigation efforts.
Technological Focus
CEO Byron Boots highlighted that Overland AI’s success stems from developing core autonomy for individual vehicle intelligence that actually works in field conditions. The company views this as the foundation for future collaborative autonomy across multiple vehicles.
A notable application of their technology involves breaching missions – some of the most dangerous operations in ground combat. By integrating autonomous systems with the 36th Engineer Brigade, Overland AI helped create human-machine formations that significantly reduced risk to soldiers during obstacle breaches.
Funding Details
The $100 million funding round was led by 8VC, with continued participation from Point72 Ventures, Ascend Venture Capital, Shasta Ventures, and Overmatch Ventures. New investors include Valor Equity Partners and StepStone Group. The total amount includes a $20 million venture debt facility from TriplePoint Capital.
This substantial investment signals growing confidence in autonomous ground systems for defense applications and Overland AI’s approach of building technology that performs reliably in real-world military conditions.
