Agility Robotics’ Digit Expands to Toyota Manufacturing After Successful Pilot

Agility Robotics has signed an agreement with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) to deploy its humanoid robot, Digit, following a successful year-long pilot program. This partnership represents a significant milestone in the commercial adoption of humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing environments.

Key Details of the Toyota Partnership

After evaluating various robot options, TMMC has chosen to implement Digit robots in its facilities. The initial pilot involved three Digits and proceeded through development, proof-of-technology, and onsite phases. Toyota now plans to deploy seven additional humanoids specifically for loading and unloading totes from automated tuggers, with potential for further expansion if successful.

TMMC, Toyota’s largest manufacturing operation outside Japan, employs over 8,500 people across its vehicle assembly plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario. The company produced more than 535,000 vehicles in 2025 and recently announced a $1.1 billion investment to build its 6th generation RAV4 at these plants.

Expanding Use Cases and Benefits

Beyond the current implementation, Agility and TMMC will explore additional applications for robots and AI throughout manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics operations. A key focus will be automating repetitive and physically demanding tasks to reduce employee strain, enhance safety, and free human workers for higher-value activities.

According to Agility Robotics, Digit is designed for seamless integration into existing facilities without requiring costly retrofits. The robot can continuously learn new tasks and adapt to changing workflows, with AI accelerating its commercial capabilities.

Growing Adoption of Humanoid Robots

Toyota joins several Fortune 500 companies already deploying Agility’s humanoids, including:

  • GXO Logistics (the first company to deploy Digit commercially under a RaaS model)
  • Schaeffler
  • Amazon
  • Mercado Libre

Agility Robotics CEO Peggy Johnson emphasized that their next generation of Digit will be “the first cooperatively safe humanoid robot to work alongside people,” enabling companies like Toyota to scale humanoid deployment beyond current possibilities.

Industry Context

The article notes that several other companies are developing humanoid robots for commercial applications, including Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Tesla, and others. These robots are being tested or deployed in various industrial settings, from automotive manufacturing to logistics and warehousing.

With global labor shortages affecting manufacturing, humanoid robots offer a potential solution for monotonous, process-oriented tasks that are difficult to staff consistently. Agility Robotics’ offerings include both the Digit robot and Agility Arc, a cloud-based platform for managing robot fleets.
