ARM Institute Issues Project Call for Modernizing Defense Industrial Base

The Advanced Robotics in Manufacturing (ARM) Institute has launched a new project call specifically for its members to modernize the organic industrial base (OIB) through robotics technology and workforce solutions. This initiative, backed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Manufacturing Technology program, aims to address critical modernization needs in defense manufacturing facilities.

Key Focus Areas

The project call targets several specialized technical areas to enhance military production capabilities:

  • Digital operations technology
  • Real-time manufacturing sensors for robotics
  • AI robotic process planning
  • In-situ quality checks
  • Reduced operator exposure
  • Cost reduction in operations
  • Pilot line of non-traditional OIB products
  • Mobile and large surface automation

Project Requirements and Timeline

The ARM Institute has established clear parameters for successful proposals:

  • Whitepaper submissions are due by March 2
  • Project performance deadline is October 1, with possible earlier funding
  • Proposals must result in deployable prototypes for OIB facilities
  • Teams with existing OIB facility relationships are preferred
  • All projects require military service or OIB site commitment
  • Cost-sharing is mandatory and factors into evaluation

Focus on Implementation and Integration

The Pittsburgh-based consortium emphasizes practical solutions with proven track records. Successful proposals will need to demonstrate how technologies can be effectively integrated into existing OIB facilities, which currently face challenges with antiquated equipment and poor integration that hamper production operations.

Funding for selected projects is expected to exceed that of past initiatives, reflecting the importance of modernizing facilities that produce critical military technology including munitions, transportation vehicles, and other warfighter necessities.

Workforce Development Component

Beyond technical innovations, the ARM Institute strongly encourages education and workforce development elements in proposals. The institute may match strong education concepts with technical proposals to create comprehensive solutions that address both technological and human capital needs.

Education partners are specifically invited to submit proposals focused on training the OIB workforce to adapt to technological changes. This dual approach recognizes that successful modernization requires both advanced robotics and a skilled workforce capable of operating these systems.

Support for Applicants

The ARM Institute will host an informational webinar on February 19 at 3:00 p.m. ET to answer questions and provide details about the submission process. This member-only opportunity represents a significant push to strengthen America’s defense manufacturing capabilities through advanced robotics and automation.
