Apptronik Raises $520 Million for Apollo Humanoid Robot Development

Apptronik Inc. has secured a massive $520 million Series A-X funding round, bringing its total Series A funding to over $935 million and approaching $1 billion in total capital raised. This investment represents a significant vote of confidence in the company’s humanoid robotics technology.

Key Developments and Company Background

Apptronik, based in Austin, Texas, has nearly 300 employees and emerged from the Human Centered Robotics Lab at the University of Texas at Austin. The company’s flagship product, Apollo, builds on nearly a decade of development work across 15 previous robots, including NASA’s Valkyrie robot.

CEO Jeff Cardenas emphasized that this investment supports their mission to create humanoid robots designed to work alongside humans as collaborators rather than mere tools. The extended funding round closed at three times the company’s original valuation, demonstrating strong investor confidence.

Apollo’s Applications and Partnerships

Apollo humanoids are designed for human collaboration in industries such as manufacturing and logistics, with potential future applications in healthcare and home environments. The robots are intended to handle physically demanding tasks like transporting components, sorting, and kitting.

Apptronik has established strategic partnerships with several major companies:

  • Mercedes-Benz
  • GXO Logistics
  • Jabil
  • Google DeepMind (to build next-generation humanoids powered by Gemini Robotics)

Investment Allocation

The new funding will enable Apptronik to:

  • Ramp up Apollo production
  • Expand global commercial and pilot deployments
  • Accelerate time to market
  • Invest in use cases for retail, manufacturing, and logistics customers
  • Build state-of-the-art facilities for robot training and data collection

The company expects to complete development of its latest robot model later this year.

Investors

The funding round included participation from both existing and new investors:

  • Existing: B Capital, Google, Mercedes-Benz, PEAK6
  • New: AT&T Ventures, John Deere, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA)

Humanoid Robot Market Context

Apptronik’s funding success reflects a broader boom in humanoid robotics investment. Other significant recent funding rounds include:

  • Figure AI: $1 billion (Series C)
  • Agility Robotics: $400 million
  • LimX Dynamics: $200 million
  • Leju Robotics: $200 million
  • Neura Robotics: $123 million

Despite high investor interest, commercial deployments remain limited. Agility Robotics leads with deployments at Mercado Libre and GXO, while Figure has deployed robots with a paying customer since December 2024. Boston Dynamics is preparing for commercial deployments of its Atlas humanoid, with all units committed for 2026 and plans for high-precision sequencing by 2028 and complex assembly tasks by 2030.

Industry Outlook

Hyundai Motor Group, Boston Dynamics’ parent company, has ambitious plans to manufacture up to 30,000 humanoids annually by 2028, signaling significant growth expectations for the sector. The industry’s development will be further explored at the upcoming Robotics Summit & Expo, featuring a keynote panel on humanoids with representatives from Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics, and ASTM International.
