DEWALT and August Robotics Partner to Revolutionize Concrete Floor Drilling for Data Centers

DEWALT and August Robotics have joined forces to create an autonomous concrete floor drilling system that promises to transform data center construction by significantly reducing drilling time and improving accuracy.

The Innovative Drilling Solution

The new system combines August Robotics’ autonomous mobile robot (AMR) technology with DEWALT’s industrial drilling equipment. This collaboration targets the data center construction market, where thousands of holes must be drilled into concrete slabs for server rack installation.

August Robotics’ Lionel robot, originally launched in 2019 for exhibition floor marking and industrial layout, serves as the foundation for this new drilling system. Lionel’s key strength is its precision, with accuracy within ±1/8 inch (3.175 mm), and its ability to work directly from building CAD files.

Key Benefits of the Robotic Drilling System

The autonomous drilling solution offers several significant advantages:

  • Dramatically reduced timeframes – compressing floor preparation schedules from 8-9 weeks down to just 7-9 days with four robots
  • Exceptional accuracy – 99.97% placement accuracy demonstrated in field testing
  • Cost efficiency – reducing the cost per hole from over $60 to approximately $20
  • Improved safety and reduced worker fatigue
  • Freeing skilled workers for higher-value tasks
  • Adaptability to various environments with obstacle avoidance capabilities

Current Status and Future Plans

The dual-branded system is currently in an early access program with 12 robots already deployed in the field. These robots have successfully drilled 108,000 holes while maintaining exceptional accuracy. Meanwhile, the core Lionel solution has mapped over 300 million square feet (27.8 million square meters) of floor space.

According to Alex Schickling, director of robotics at DEWALT, the company’s go-to-market strategy is still in an experimental phase, with commercial availability expected by mid-2026. The product was recently showcased at the World of Concrete Trade Show in Las Vegas.

Conclusion

This partnership between DEWALT and August Robotics represents a significant advancement in construction automation. By combining DEWALT’s drilling expertise with August Robotics’ autonomous navigation capabilities, the companies have created a solution that promises substantial time and cost savings for data center construction while maintaining high standards of precision and safety.

Both companies’ sales teams will be working with their respective partners to develop a fleet of these robots in the field, potentially transforming how concrete drilling is approached in large-scale construction projects.
