New York Robotics Launches to Establish NYC as Global Robotics Hub

New York Robotics (NYR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the robotics community in the New York Tri-State region, has officially launched with more than 160 robotics startups in its ecosystem, nearly 100 of which are based in New York City alone.

Building a Robotics Ecosystem in NYC

NYR aims to establish New York City as a global contender in robotics alongside established hubs such as Boston, Silicon Valley, Pittsburgh, and international centers like Munich, Zurich, Singapore, and Odense, Denmark. The organization began as a Meetup group in 2021 and has spent two years preparing for this official launch.

Jacob Hennessey-Rubin, co-founder and executive director of NYR, recognized that while New York had many robotics startups, investment ecosystems, service providers, and academic communities, it lacked a resource to connect these individual elements. Since 2024, NYR has organized more than 20 events to foster these connections.

Why New York City for Robotics?

According to Hennessey-Rubin, New York City offers unique advantages for robotics startups, including:

  • A diverse landscape of people, buildings, real estate, and environments
  • A long history of innovation (Tesla, Edison, Bell)
  • More than 20 universities within 100 miles of Manhattan with robotics or engineering programs
  • Central location between other robotics clusters in Boston and Pittsburgh
  • Proximity to Washington D.C., where the National Robotics Caucus has restarted

Organization Structure and Funding

NYR has adopted a private funding model to allow for broader scope in its activities. The organization has secured 10 founding partners, including J.P. Morgan, AlleyCorp, Informa Markets, Interwoven Ventures, Standard Bots, Monozukuri Ventures, Cybernetix Ventures, and Newlab.

Key Sectors for Robotics in NYC

While NYR isn’t limiting itself to specific industries, it has identified several strategic focus areas:

  • Medical fields (lab automation, pharmaceuticals, hospital logistics, biotech)
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing, warehousing, supply chain, and logistics
  • Retail, food, and hospitality
  • Robotics in art and theater

The NYR Index and Future Plans

As part of its launch, NYR released a private beta version of the NYR Index, a proprietary ecosystem intelligence tool providing partners with exclusive access to data, insights, and mapping across startups, investors, labs, and enterprise participants. The organization also plans to launch a Discord channel and continue growing the jobs section of its website.

Moving forward, NYR aims to be an active part of the robotics community across the country, sending representatives to trade shows and industry events. While there is interest in establishing a physical location to aid startups, the current focus is on events and broader ecosystem support.

Government Relations and Policy

NYR plans to engage with lawmakers to raise awareness about the importance of robotics and ensure that embodied AI is included in policy conversations. The organization recognizes that while this aspect has been somewhat overlooked in policy discussions, it represents an important emerging area.
