Figure’s Helix 02: Moving Beyond Acrobatic Robots to Practical Household Assistance

While many humanoid robots have been showcased performing impressive acrobatics like backflips and martial arts moves, California-based company Figure is taking a more practical approach with its latest AI software, Helix 02.

Figure 02: A Robot for Everyday Tasks

Figure recently demonstrated the capabilities of its black-and-white humanoid robot, Figure 02, running on the Helix 02 software platform. In a newly released video, the robot autonomously completes a dishwasher loading and unloading task with remarkable human-like movements.

The robot demonstrates sophisticated behaviors such as:

  • Unloading clean dishes from a dishwasher
  • Placing items in upper cabinets and drawers
  • Loading dirty dishes back into the dishwasher
  • Using its foot to kick up the dishwasher door
  • Bumping drawers closed with its hip

Technical Achievements

According to Figure, Helix 02 represents significant advancements in robotics:

  • A “single neural system” controls the robot’s full body directly from visual input
  • The dishwasher demonstration represents a four-minute, fully autonomous task
  • The sequence integrates walking, manipulation, and balance without human intervention
  • Figure claims this is “the longest horizon, most complex task completed autonomously by a humanoid robot to date”

This capability stems from extensive training on over 1,000 hours of human motion data combined with simulation-to-real-world reinforcement learning techniques.

Beyond Dishwashing

Figure 02’s capabilities extend beyond kitchen tasks. The robot has also demonstrated abilities in:

  • Sorting packages in logistics warehouses
  • Loading washing machines
  • Folding laundry

Cautious Optimism

While these demonstrations are impressive, the article cautions that such tech demos should be viewed critically. The robot’s performance in controlled environments may not translate to unpredictable real-world settings with different layouts or messier conditions.

Unlike robots focused on flashy but impractical capabilities, Figure’s approach emphasizes everyday utility, potentially bringing us closer to robots that can genuinely assist with household chores.
