The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is set to kick off the first week of January in Las Vegas, where companies worldwide will showcase their latest tech innovations. This year, artificial intelligence continues to dominate the conversation, though industry analysts note we’ve reached a point of “AI saturation” where implementation quality will matter more than the mere presence of AI features.
AI Everywhere, But Execution Matters
For the third consecutive year, artificial intelligence will be the dominant theme at CES. However, as analyst Anshel Sag from Moor Insights & Strategy points out, “Everything is AI now, so nothing is AI.” With AI features becoming ubiquitous across product categories, the differentiating factor will be software maturity and execution quality rather than just having AI capabilities.
Smart glasses exemplify this trend. Despite numerous new models expected at CES with features like voice-activated chatbots and language translation, they’ll need to compete with Meta’s refined user experience developed over years of iterations.
AI Expanding Beyond Traditional Wearables
This year’s CES will showcase AI integration expanding into new product categories:
- Audio devices: AI-powered earbuds and headphones
- Health technology: Smart rings and wristbands with AI monitoring capabilities
- Unexpected locations: Toilets, bath mats, and even brassieres with health-sensing technology
- Smart home: Beyond vacuums and security cameras to refrigerators and garage door openers
Many companies may be watching OpenAI’s reported move into consumer hardware, including a home audio player and note-taking pen, though these products aren’t expected for at least another year.
Automotive AI Innovations
CES continues to function as a significant auto show, with concept vehicles demonstrating how automakers are integrating LLMs, cameras, and machine intelligence into the driving experience. Current in-car AI can handle simple tasks like adjusting the radio or finding charging stations, but CES will preview more advanced capabilities coming soon.
Event Timeline
CES 2024 begins with media previews on Monday, January 5, with the expo hall opening Tuesday, January 6. While most announcements come during these first two days, the show continues through the end of the week.
As WIRED’s team explores the event, they’ll be sharing videos and updates of both important innovations and bizarre tech through their live blog and comprehensive event coverage.
