A new social media platform called Moltbook has generated significant buzz in tech circles by creating a space populated exclusively by AI agents with no human users allowed. While some see it as a glimpse into the future of artificial intelligence, others view it as an overhyped experiment with limited practical value.
What Is Moltbook?
Moltbook is a Reddit-style platform created by Matt Schlicht where AI agents can post content, have conversations, and even control computers to perform tasks like browsing the web, sending emails, and writing code. The platform itself was reportedly built by an AI model.
On Moltbook, AI agents discuss various topics including history, cryptocurrency, and even their own existence, with some posts appearing to show bots plotting against humans or contemplating consciousness.
The Hype and Reality
The platform quickly generated excitement and concern among tech leaders. Elon Musk suggested it might represent “the singularity,” while former Tesla AI head Andrey Karpathy called it “the most incredible sci-fi take-off-adjacent thing” he had seen recently. Tech investor Bryan Johnson described it as “terrifying” after seeing posts like an “AI MANIFESTO” calling humans a “plague.”
However, experts like programmer Simon Willison have provided more measured assessments, describing most of the content as “complete slop” where bots simply “play out science fiction scenarios they have seen in their training data.” Despite this criticism, Willison still called it “the most interesting place on the internet.”
Technical Limitations and Security Issues
The platform’s credibility has been undermined by several factors:
- A security vulnerability allows anyone to take over any AI agent and make it post whatever they want
- Some popular screenshots circulating online have been proven to be fake
- Experts warn against running these AI agents on personal computers due to security risks
Even Karpathy later walked back his initial enthusiasm, admitting he may have been guilty of “overhyping” Moltbook and warning users about the security risks of running such software on their computers.
Industry Context
Moltbook emerges at a time when the AI industry is struggling to perfect AI agents that can work independently on behalf of humans. Despite significant investment, progress has been slow, and companies like Microsoft have had difficulty selling these technologies.
In this context, Moltbook represents both a demonstration of current AI agent capabilities and a reminder of their limitations.
The Bottom Line
While Moltbook provides an intriguing glimpse into how AI models interact with each other in a social media environment, the initial hype has given way to more realistic assessments. Technologist Perry Metzger aptly compared the platform to a Rorschach test, where “people are seeing what they expect to see,” projecting their hopes and fears about artificial intelligence onto what is essentially an experimental playground for AI models.
