AI in Hollywood: Controversy Over ChatGPT Use in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5

Controversy erupted online when fans spotted what appeared to be ChatGPT open on a computer while the Duffer brothers worked on “Stranger Things” Season 5 scripts, raising questions about AI’s role in entertainment production.

The ChatGPT Controversy

A still from a behind-the-scenes documentary seemingly showed one of the Duffer brothers with OpenAI’s ChatGPT open while working on scripts for the final season of the popular Netflix show. This sparked immediate backlash from fans, with one commenting on social media, “WTF man, now we know why season 5 sucked.”

Martina Radwan, who directed the documentary “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5,” denied witnessing ChatGPT use in the writers’ room during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “No, of course not,” she stated. “I witnessed creative exchanges. I witnessed conversation.” However, her follow-up comment that “doesn’t everybody have it open, to just do quick research?” left some ambiguity about potential AI use.

Growing Tension Between AI and Entertainment

This incident highlights the increasing tension between artificial intelligence and creative industries. Viewers have shown resistance to AI’s involvement in their favorite entertainment, yet production companies continue exploring its applications, particularly in areas like “de-aging” actors.

Similar controversies have emerged around AI use in other productions, including:

  • Tweaking actor Adrien Brody’s Hungarian accent in “The Brutalist”
  • Generating promotional posters for Alex Garland’s “Civil War”

Industry Divided on AI Adoption

The entertainment industry remains divided on AI integration. While some creators like director Guillermo del Toro have taken strong stances against it (stating he “would rather die than use it”), major studios are embracing the technology. Disney recently signed a $1 billion licensing deal with OpenAI that will allow users to interact with Disney characters through OpenAI’s video generator Sora.

The controversy reflects broader concerns about AI’s potential impact on creative industries. Just as digital technology disrupted journalism, many worry that Hollywood could face similar challenges as AI tools become more sophisticated and widespread.

The Future of AI in Entertainment

As AI technology advances, the debate around its appropriate use in entertainment will likely intensify. The industry must balance innovation with preserving the human creativity that audiences value, while addressing concerns about authenticity, artistic integrity, and potential job displacement.

The “Stranger Things” incident demonstrates that audiences are paying close attention to how their favorite content is created and are quick to react when AI appears to encroach on what they consider human creative territory.
