Emergency officials responded to a report of possible explosives at Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado on Monday, but no threat was ultimately found after a four-hour investigation.
Incident Overview
On Monday morning around 10:25 am, local authorities received a call regarding suspicious materials at a garage facility on the Buckley Space Force Base. The report prompted an immediate emergency response that included:
- Establishment of a 1,000-foot perimeter around a large garage building
- Closure of adjacent streets
- Deployment of base fire department personnel
- Security team activation
- Explosive ordnance disposal crew mobilization
Aerial footage captured by local broadcaster KDVR showed the facility at the center of the investigation – a large two-bay garage containing construction equipment and trucks parked both inside and outside the building.
Resolution
According to base officials who spoke with KDVR, “no threat was found” and the situation was fully resolved by 2:15 pm, approximately four hours after the initial report.
Space Force Context
The incident highlights the security protocols in place at facilities belonging to Space Force, which was established in 2019 as the newest branch of the US Department of Defense. With approximately 9,400 active duty personnel, Space Force serves as the country’s military space defense organization.
As tensions in the space domain increase, particularly with China, Space Force is expected to expand in both size and capabilities. This growth also means Space Force installations may increasingly become potential targets for espionage or sabotage attempts, necessitating robust security measures like those demonstrated in Monday’s response.
The swift and comprehensive response to this ultimately false alarm demonstrates the seriousness with which security threats are treated at military space facilities.
