The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently faced embarrassment after releasing a promotional video for its new drone program that inadvertently featured Chinese-made drones—directly contradicting the Trump administration’s own policies and messaging on Chinese technology.
The Controversial Oversight
In a 40-second promotional clip touting “American Air Superiority,” DHS showcased its new drone program complete with uplifting music and bold claims about “innovation in action.” However, drone researcher Faine Greenwood quickly spotted a critical error: the footage clearly showed DHS agents using remote controllers manufactured by DJI, a Chinese company based in Shenzhen.
This oversight is particularly problematic because DJI hardware uses closed-source communication protocols, confirming that the officers were indeed piloting Chinese-made drones in the official government video.
Policy Contradictions
The gaffe highlights several inconsistencies in the current administration’s approach:
- The Trump administration had moved to ban Chinese-made drones in December, specifically including DJI products
- While some restrictions were temporarily lifted following Pentagon recommendations, DJI drones remain officially prohibited
- The administration has maintained strongly anti-China rhetoric throughout its term
Questions Raised
The video raises legitimate concerns about government practices:
- Why is a federal security agency using technology that has been expressly prohibited for security reasons?
- If American drone alternatives exist, why aren’t they being utilized for sensitive homeland security operations?
- How did such an obvious contradiction make it into an official promotional video?
Public Reaction
The error prompted mockery online, with Greenwood quipping: “Someone needs to ask Kristi Noem why she and DHS are promoting and using Sinister Chinese Communist drones, instead of Square-Jawed Heterosexual American Drones.”
The incident highlights not only potential security concerns but also raises questions about the thoroughness of government communications and adherence to its own policies.
